State of Mississippi Flag Year First Flown: 1894 Designed By: Committee of General W.T. Martin Design: A flag with three equally wide horizontal stripes. The top stripe is blue, the middle stripe is white, and the bottom stripe is red. In the upper left corner there is a red square featuring a blue cross and 13 five-point white stars. Meaning: The red, white, and blue are used to match the national colors of the United States of America. The flag also borrows design characteristics from the flags of the Confederate States of America, which honors the history of the state of Mississippi. The 13 stars are used to signify the original 13 colonies of the United States.   History of the Flag The Bonnie Blue Flag The Magnolia Flag The Stars and Bars The Confederate Battle Flag Mississippi joined the United States Union in 1817, but the state did not adopt an official flag for quite some time after that. On January 9th, 1861, at the start of the Civil War, Mississippi seceded from the Union a raised the Bonnie Blue Flag over the capitol building in Jackson. On January 26th of that same year Mississippi adopted its first official state flag, which had a magnolia tree placed in the center and a corner dedicated to a copy of the Bonnie Blue Flag. After the Civil War ended and Mississippi rejoined the union, the Magnolia Flag remained the official flag of Mississippi and would continue to do so until 1894. In a Special Session of 1894, Mississippi Legislature adopted their current flag design. The new flag borrowed design features from the Confederate Stars and Bars flag and the Battle Flag of the Confederate Army. The state flag of Mississippi includes a replica of the Confederate Battle Flag in its upper left corner and borrows the layout of the Stars and Bars flag but changes the top red stripe to a blue stripe. As of 2001, the Mississippi state flag is the only U.S. state flag to bear a confederate flag design.
