State of Nebraska Flag State of Nebraska Flag Year First Flown: 1925 Designed By: Isaac Wiles (seal) Design: A blue flag with the Nebraska state seal placed in the center of it. The seal contains illustrations of the Rocky Mountains, the Missouri River, bundles of wheat, a cabin, a blacksmith, a train, and a steamboat. The seal also includes the date "March 1st 1867" and the state motto "Equality before the Law." Meaning: The wheat and the cabin symbolize the state's agriculture, the blacksmith represents industry, and the train and steamboat represent transportation. History of the Flag Welcome to Nebraska! Nebraska became the 37th state to join the Union in 1867, but the state did not adopt an official flag until 1963. However, in 1925 the state of Nebraska did adopt a state banner and proudly displayed it at University of Nebraska football games. The banner was essentially the same as a state flag, just without the title. Finally, the state's banner was finally deemed an official state flag in 1963, and in 1965 the Nebraska Legislature voted to have the flag flown whenever the American Flag was also displayed. Nebraska was one of the last states to officially adopt a flag, and unfortunately the flag is considered one of the worst in North America by the North American Vexillological Association. The Great Seal of Nebraska The Great Seal of Nebraska After Nebraska gained its statehood, the state's first governor called a Special Session of the Nebraska Legislature in order to pass laws that he felt were necessary for the successful launch of a new state government. One of these laws dealt with the state seal and required the Secretary of State to procure the seal for Nebraska. The bill was signed on March 1st, 1867, and the Secretary of State was given $25.00 to accomplish the task.
